Mnemonic Techniques and Lie Detection: Accuracy of Truth and Deception Judgments in Repeated Accounts

چکیده
This study was an examination into whether the use of memory-enhancing techniques (mnemonics) in interviews can be helpful to distinguish truth tellers from liars. In previous (Izotovas et al., 2018), it found that when mnemonic were used interview immediately after event, truth-tellers reported more details than liars those immediate and again a delay. Moreover, truth-tellers, but not liars, showed patterns reporting indicative genuine memory decay.
current experiment, participants (n = 92) asked read repeated statements by Izotovas al.’s (2018) decide they truthful or deceptive. One group (informed condition) received information about findings before reading statement. The other no statement (uninformed condition). After made veracity judgements, open-ended question asking what factors influenced their credibility decision. Although judged accurately informed condition (65.2%) uninformed (47.8%), this difference significant. both conditions deceptive detected at chance level (52.2%). Participants who relied on self-reported diagnostic verbal cues deceit accurate unreliable cues. could happen because only minority (27.4%) based decisions truth/deceit.

Accuracy of deception judgments.
We analyze the accuracy of deception judgments, synthesizing research results from 206 documents and 24,483 judges. In relevant studies, people attempt to discriminate lies from truths in real time with no special aids or training. In these circumstances, people achieve an average of 54% correct lie-truth judgments, correctly classifying 47% of lies as deceptive and 61% of truths as nondeceptiv...
متن کامل"He's guilty!": investigator bias in judgments of truth and deception.
Detecting deception is an inherently difficult task, but one that plays a critical role for law enforcement investigators in the interrogation room. In general, research has failed to indicate that performance in this domain is improved by training or prior experience. A signal detection framework is applied to the paradigm to better conceptualize the influence of these two factors. We found th...
متن کاملA Repeated Lie Becomes a Truth? The Effect of Intentional Control and Training on Deception
Deception has been demonstrated as a task that involves executive control such as conflict monitoring and response inhibition. In the present study, we investigated whether or not the controlled processes associated with deception could be trained to be more efficient. Forty-eight participants finished a reaction time-based differentiation of deception paradigm (DDP) task using self- and other-...
